Early settlement and piracy era.
Open grounds and viewpoints.
Panama Viejo is the archaeological site of the original Panama City, founded in 1519 and later destroyed during a pirate attack. The area preserves the remains of churches, plazas, and stone structures that offer insight into the city’s early colonial period. Visitors can walk freely through the ruins, visit the small museum, and climb the cathedral tower for views over the site and modern skyline beyond. It’s a calm, educational visit that provides historical context and should not be confused with Casco Viejo, which was built later.
